Endless Pleasures I: Ghosts
2019
This myth is found not only in ancient Greece in the figure of Alcestis, but also in the Chinese opera of the 16th century or among the Turkic peoples of Central Asia. But what if the “true lover” chooses the afterlife because she can no longer stand her husband? Then what does their afterlife sound like? What sounds and experiences does she encounter along the way? GEISTER connects China with Europe, antiquity with the present, synthesizer, beat and glowing LED cables with millennia-old traditional instruments of China and the shamanic chants of the Kazakh Ulzhan Babussynova. The audience follows Alkestis and her traces into the underworld: the factory district around the whiteBOX becomes a polyphonic hellspace, an installative soundscape in whose empty corridors, freight elevators and commercial spaces the musicians follow the pulse of a relentless machine. Together they conjure up musical visions of the afterlife, which are mixed together in the “Thanatos Switchboard.” Here, in the stage space of the whiteBOX, the audio signals converge and the two musical “angels of death”, composer Marc Sinan and clarinetist Oguz Büyükberber, mix an orgiastic sound and video collage. Marc Sinan’s score overwrites traditional music from Asia and Europe and combines it with improvisations by the participating virtuosos from China and Europe. The performance unfolds a hypnotic, trance-like intensity that the audience can follow autonomously through the hellish sound spaces. An incessantly driving beat, made visible in the form of a time code, connects the musicians at their respective venues: the algorithm has total control, which no one can escape.
